Jones Faculty Research Award

The Jones College of Business Faculty Research Awards program recognizes faculty whose research is formally accepted for publication in qualifying journals. The program celebrates publication accomplishments while providing funding to support continued research productivity.

Approved faculty awards are deposited into University research accounts for allowable research and scholarly expenses.

Award Amounts

Each eligible article generates a single award based on its journal category.

Journal CategoryAward per eligible article
UTD24 or FT50$3,000
ABDC A*$2,000
ABDC A$1,000

If a journal appears in more than one category, only the highest applicable award applies. Awards for overlapping categories cannot be combined.

These amounts apply to the article as a whole. For coauthored articles, the award is divided equally among all authors, with eligible shares allocated according to the guidelines. Each Jones College faculty member may receive a maximum of $6,000 per academic year.

Eligibility and Timing

Awards may be claimed for peer-reviewed research articles formally accepted during the current academic year, which runs from July 1 through June 30.

Eligibility is based on the formal acceptance date, rather than the online or print publication date. Formal acceptance means unconditional acceptance communicated by the journal’s editor or editorial office. Revise-and-resubmit decisions and conditional acceptances requiring additional editorial review are not eligible.

Claims must be submitted within 90 days of formal acceptance. Claims for previous academic years will not be considered, and each article may receive only one award.

The journal’s ranking or list membership on the formal acceptance date determines eligibility and the applicable award.

Support for Faculty and Student Coauthors

For solo-authored articles, the eligible Jones College faculty author receives the full applicable award as research funding. For coauthored articles, eligible faculty shares are deposited into their individual University research accounts.

Shares attributable to Jones College student coauthors support student research-related travel, including travel to present the awarded research. These funds are administered by the College and are not paid directly to students as awards.

Shares attributable to other ineligible authors are forfeited and are not redistributed. See the guidelines for the complete allocation rules.

How Award Funds May Be Used

Faculty awards support allowable research and scholarly expenses in accordance with University policies. They are deposited into University research accounts and are not paid as supplemental compensation.

Accounts with no expenditure or deposit activity for three consecutive fiscal years will be closed, and remaining funds will revert to the College.

Review and Funding Availability

Awards are subject to verification of eligibility, supporting documentation, journal classification, author allocations, and each faculty member’s remaining annual award allowance.

Funding is subject to availability. Submitting a claim does not guarantee approval or payment. If available funds cannot cover all approved claims, allocations may be reduced proportionately, with affected faculty notified before funds are allocated.

The journal lists used for this program determine award eligibility only. They do not change annual evaluation, promotion, tenure, workload, or other personnel standards.
